Health & Wellness Standards
We are glad to offer youth competitors the opportunity to compete in this unique format. However, due to COVID-19, additional precautions are required to keep everyone healthy and climbing strong.
First and foremost, access to First Ascent Humboldt Park is restricted to Illinois residents and visitors who meet the City of Chicago strict travel restrictions. Out of state competitors, and Illinois residents who have recently travelled out of state, will be turned away unless they can demonstrate that they have met Chicago’s current travel quarantine and/or testing requirements..
In addition, all competitors and spectators must abide by our health and wellness standards while at First Ascent. Most importantly, the standards include:
Visiting competitors must purchase a $17 Student Session Pass to enter, and a Session Pass only gives you access to one 2-hour session. If you’d like to join the next session, you will need to purchase an additional Session Pass.
If you’d like to have access for multiple sessions over the course of the competition, you may also purchase a 2-Week Trial Membership.
Spectators and coaches will be allowed in for free, but still must reserve a 2-hour session in advance, which is subject to overall capacity restrictions.
Everyone is required to leave the facility at the end of a 2-hour session so we can abide by capacity restrictions and perform effective contact tracing.
Affirming a health declaration that you do not have symptoms of COVID-19, you have not been exposed to anyone who has symptoms, and you are not subject to any quarantine restrictions due to qualified travel under Chicago’s Emergency Travel Order.
Wearing an approved mask at all times while at First Ascent. Approved masks include 2-ply cloth masks, medical masks, N-95s, etc. Neck gaiters, bandanas, or masks with valves are not permitted.
Sanitizing your hands when you arrive and regularly throughout your session.
Practicing physical distancing at all times while at First Ascent, giving 6 feet of space to everyone.
Thank you in advance for abiding by these standards to promote the health and wellness of your fellow climbers.
Competition Rules & Info
Here’s what you need to know about the competition format, rules, and more:
Event runs from Monday, December 7th to Sunday, December 20th.
Event will be both a Youth R61 local event and a collegiate Heartland Region local event. Please make sure you sign up for the proper event with USA Climbing. Both events will use identical problems.
Registration and payment for this competition is handled through USAC Climbing and their online partner—Kaya—not First Ascent. Detailed information on the Youth series, regions, Kaya, event rules, scoring, etc. can be found on the USAC website here. Detailed information on the Collegiate series, regions, Kaya, event rules, scoring, etc. can be found on the USA Climbing website here.
All competitors must have access to First Ascent Humboldt Park via an active membership or the purchase of a $17 Student Session Pass. *Please note – this is completely separate from the USAC $31.20 competition event fee and USAC Memberships fee.
A list of the competition boulders and an FAQ sheet will be available at the front desk for your reference when you check in for your climbing block. USA Climbing and Kaya are solely responsible for the all aspects of “judging,” “scoring,” video submissions, and other competition logistics and details. First Ascent staff will not be able to address any technical issues related to USAC or Kaya—only “physical” issues with the competition boulders such as a placard, starting tape, spinning hold, etc.
